H.R. 2262:
Threatens the Future of Mineral Exploration and Mining on Public Land
Which will Hurt Nevada and
Increase the Nation’s Reliance on Foreign Sources of Minerals

Laura Skaer, Executive Director of the Northwest Mining Association
is requesting letters about H.R. 2262.

The NWMA is asking for your assistance in helping populate the new Grassroots Power Site with different letters members can use in writing to Senator Reid, their Senators, Congressmen and members of the authorizing committees to highlight the many problems for exploration and junior mining companies with H.R. 2262.

Please take the time to write a 4 or 5 paragraph letter using the attached talking points as a guide. If you have testified or submitted written testimony, use 4 or 5 paragraphs from your testimony. The letters will be put into a database and the grassroots power site computer will randomly select 1st, 2d, 3d, 4th & 5th paragraphs to compose a point and click letter that will be sent to Senator Reid, members of the House Energy & Minerals subcommittee and the letter writer’s two Senators and Representative.

Please follow this format in composing your letter:

1. A generic introductory paragraph stating that you are writing in opposition to HR 2262, “The Hardrock Mining and Reclamation Act of 2007.”
2. Three paragraphs discussing specific problems with the bill using the attached talking points or your testimony as a guide.
3. A closing paragraph asking the recipient to oppose HR 2262 and support a strong, viable domestic mining industry.

Additional information and talking points are posted on the NWMA website.

Please give this your earliest attention as NWMA wants to have the letters and the grassroots power site ready to use at the Geology Symposium in Arizona the last week of September

Please email your letters to Laura Skaer so they can be put into the grassroots power site computer.

THANK YOU
Laura Skaer, Executive Director

Talking Points

These are the main talking points Prepared by the Northwest Mining Association.  Click here for details.

  • H.R. 2262 will create serious impediments for mineral exploration and mine development on public lands
  • H.R. 2262 Ignores a Fundamental Geologic Reality: Mineral Deposits can only be Mined Where They are Found
  • H.R. 2262 Fails to Recognize that Exploration and Mining are Risky and Expensive
  • The Mining Law Must Accommodate the Substantial Risks Associated with Exploration and Mineral Development - Unfortunately H.R. 2262 Increases the Risks
  • Exploration and Mining Require Secure Possession of the Land - H.R. 2262 Eliminates Security of Land Tenure
  • The H.R. 2262 Royalty Does Not Consider Underlying Private Royalty Agreements that Burden Many Mining Properties and are the Main Revenue Source for Prospectors and Claim Owners
  • H.R. 2262 Creates a One-Size-Fits-All Permitting Process for Exploration and Mining that is Inappropriate for Initial Exploration Projects
  • The Environmental Title in H.R. 2262 is Unnecessary - FLPMA Already Changed the Mining Law by Adding Comprehensive and Effective Environmental Protection Mandates
  • Keeping Lands Open to Exploration and Mining is Essential to the Future of Exploration and Mining - H.R. 2262 Inappropriately Puts Millions of Acres Off-Limits
  • H.R. 2262 will be Devastating for Hardrock Exploration and Mining in America
  • Nevada will Bear the Brunt of the Ill-Conceived Policies in H.R. 2262
  • But the Adverse Effects of this Bill will Extend far Beyond Nevada
