Correction: The May issue of the MMSA Quarterly Newsletter erroneously stated that the Mining Department of the University of Arizona would cease operations in December 2004. This is not correct, the U. of Arizona Mining Department will not close at the end of this year. Following is an extract received from Dr. Mary Paulson, Professor and Department Head, University of Arizona, Dept. of Mining and Geological Engineering.
    • "The latest MMSA newsletter was just shared with me and I want to let you know that mining engineering and the Mining and Geological Engineering Department at the University of Arizona is not under discussion for closure at this time and certainly will not be closing by December 2004. There was a report that was generated by a faculty committee looking at synergies among earth and environmental science programs on campus and buried in that report was a recommendation that the department be redirected or possibly closed. However, the Provost and the President have since stated that they did not ask this committee to make such a recommendation, did not ask the committee to even discuss the mining program, and are not now or in the foreseeable future considering any action regarding the program. We are internally making some changes in the department but those directions are driven by our Industry Leadership Board and by our faculty."
